Emery: Madrid the biggest test

Unai Emery has claimed that this evening’s game against Real Madrid is ‘the biggest test yet’.

Sevilla take on the Champions League winners in the European Super Cup in Cardiff, and the Rojiblancos Coach has insisted that his men have what it takes to beat Los Blancos, despite being overwhelming underdogs.

“We haven't seen this [Real Madrid] side yet, the first time will be tomorrow,” he told reporters.

“Preparation [for these games] is conditioned. I don't who is most at a disadvantage, them or us, but [Madrid

“'s players] are elite performers, technically, physically and tactically. With little training they can express themselves on the pitch.

“We're happy [after they summer we’ve had] but we know that what we did in pre-season is not the same.

Tomorrow will be the biggest challenge yet – to see how we shape up against Real Madrid. At our best, we have already beaten them before.

“Taking into account that there are players that have not trained much, more so for them than us, it is a gift to play this final because we don't deserve it.

“Real Madrid are the favourites, that's obvious. Our chances are based on our qualities and our competitiveness.

“Whether or not we can impose our game plan will depend on what they can impose on us. We want to take the game to them but whether they will let us is another matter.

“This Madrid side has the potential to demand more of us defensively for 90 minutes than in attack.

“We can't leave spaces open because of their speed – Cristiano, Benzema and Bale. We also can't give James any room, or let Modric or Kroos dictate play.”

Emery then commented on his own side going into the clash.

“We are starting a new season, but it is the culmination of last season. There are new players. We prepare as best we can but without later potentially facing negative consequences.

“[Kevin] Gameiro came on in the Europa League final so he could take a penalty and he was half-injured. On Tuesday we will not take such risks.

“It is a beautiful challenge. We have worked the players a lot. I think they are in good shape. We don't want 100 per cent if we cannot sustain it throughout the rest of the season.

“They started [pre-season] later than us, many of their players were at the World Cup. I think they will be physically ready as well.”
