Toshack ‘has Navas doubts’

John Toshack has questioned Real Madrid’s decision to sign Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

The former Madrid and Wales Coach has spoken to Marca in advance of the European Super Cup in Cardiff this week and as well as discussing Gareth Bale and what the fixture means to the city, has given his thoughts on Los Blancos’ summer transfers.

“I have my doubts about [the signing of] the goalkeeper. He’s good, we all know that, but I read the other day that historically there have been teams with great goalkeepers and lesser goalkeepers,” Toshack said.

“I never said Navas shouldn’t be signed…the goalkeeper must stay focused and it’s hard to maintain concentration when you have little work.

“I gave Iker [Casillas] his debut when he was 17 and he doesn’t get nervous easily. If he wasn’t then it’s much less now. I know he’ll get it right.”

Toshack was more impressed with the arrivals of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, believing them to be examples of the club’s desire to get better all the time.

“The German is very good. He has it all – vision, power, strikes the ball well,” Toshack said of Kroos.

“He’s a good age too.

“I know James less. He did good things at the World Cup and scored many goals, but had a great campaign last year at Monaco.

“The great advantage of Madrid is that each year they reach the top.”
