Thomas Vermaelen could become a Barcelona player as early as today after a fee was agreed with Arsenal.
Reports yesterday said Barca will pay the Gunners €19m for the Belgium international and Mundo Deportivo add that the deal could be completed in the early part of the weekend.
It’s claimed that Vermaelen was Barca’s second choice for a second centre-back signing of the summer, behind Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos, but ahead of the likes of Daniel Agger, the Liverpool defender who was linked with the club.
When PSG refused to sell Marquinhos Barca’s attention focused on Vermaelen and beating Manchester United to his signature.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed he would rather sell Vermaelen to a team from outside the Premier League and Barca are now expected to seal the deal.
