Arda Turan, a Rojiblanco hero

When you think of the stunning season Atletico had last year, the names that spring to mind are the likes of Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois and Diego Godin and outside the club that of Arda Turan is unlikely to be among the top mentioned. But people at the club will tell you that the Turkey international played just as big a role as any other player in the success.

Arda is a product of Galatasaray’s academy and despite a brief loan spell with Manisapor, it didn't take him long to become a hero with his hometown club as he was made captain in 2009. His performances captured the attention of Atletico and in 2011 he became the most expensive Turkish footballer ever for a fee of €12m. Since his arrival, his popularity has risen amongst the Rojiblancos faithful.

In a team known for its dogged determination, fight, organisation and solidarity, Arda is one of the few members of the squad that has that bit of magic up his sleeve to unlock a defence. The diminutive midfielder can play anywhere across an attacking three. Comfortable with both feet and composed on the ball, he can be a relief to the side when under pressure, something you would normally associate with a big target man.

His ball control, dribbling and trickery can get the side out of seemingly difficult situations and his vision is a key to a workman like midfield as he provides for the front man. Turan's movement, getting in between the lines is also a big part of his game. As the 27-year-old floats across the field, he leaves spaces for others to exploit or he finds space for himself to take advantage of.

Arda is Atletico personified. Despite his skill on the ball, he has all the qualities that represent the club and its Coach. Full of passion, desire and fight he is not afraid to get stuck in and like every member of the squad he is disciplined and does his defensive duties admirably. Although he is not the captain, he is one of many leaders and one of the players the fans and teammates look to lift the team.

This summer has perhaps confirmed his legendary status at the club. As big names Costa, Filipe Luis, David Villa and Courtois have moved on or gone back to their parent club, the Istanbul man has not been tempted despite interest from England's top teams. His loyalty yet another aspect that makes him key to this famous Atletico side and its fans.

Although some of the key members have moved on, the club have invested well in their replacements and although it will be tough to replicate last season, Arda Turan will form part of a team that will fight to the death for the club and its fans.
