Players’ union calls for change

The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) has issued a statement complaining about the situation facing its members.

Marca reports a statement from the AFE that denounced the ‘grave uncertainty about their future careers that a large group of players are experiencing with a little over two weeks before the start of the official competition.’

The main bone of contention is that there are clubs in the League system who don’t know in which division they’ll be competing with only a few weeks before the season is due to start.

That the uncertainty has been created by financial regulations voted in by the clubs, that are now costing some players their careers, has led the AFE to make a public show of complaint.

“[The AFE considers it] inadmissible that current rules governing the competition, unilaterally imposed by clubs, produce such uncertainty for the players,” the statement continued.

“[The AFE asks for] rethinking the current poor framework of professional football with the participation of the players in all that affects us in order to prevent similar situations from recurring.”
