Madrid’s Bernabeu plans blocked

Madrid’s Supreme Court has temporarily blocked Real Madrid’s attempt to renovate the Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos had planned to add a roof to the ground, as well as building a shopping centre and hotel on the site.

Construction was due to be completed by 2016 at the cost of €400m. However, the Courts have suspended the work after environmental group Ecologistas en Accion sought to have the work stopped.

A decision was reached by judges after they were informed of a process, on a European level, to open illegal state aid proceedings over the project, from which the club allegedly may have gained.

It is claimed that the state aid could have come from land exchanges and agreements reached between Real Madrid and the Madrid City Council.

The European champions are likely to appeal.
