Villa: Atletico will be competitive

New York City FC’s David Villa believes Atletico Madrid will again fight for the League title next season.

Villa left the champions for a move to MLS at the end of the season but has backed his old club to maintain their form of recent years.

“Atletico are very good in all positions and will replace the players who have left,” Villa said, according to Marca.

“They will again be competitive and will have a great season.”

Villa also explained why he chose to move to the new franchise, revealing he rejected offers to stay in Europe.

“More and more players from Europe are interested in coming here to play. I think that’s good for MLS,” he said.

“It’s not only the city but the project. This brand has franchises around the world, such as Manchester City, and will make a great team.

“I had options to continue in Europe or come to America. It excited me to play another kind of football.”

Villa was part of Spain’s World Cup squad and he was due to retire from international football after the tournament, but hinted he could reconsider.

“The Coach knows what I can do,” he said.

“If I’m needed he’ll call, if I’m not, he won’t.”
