Del Bosque wishes for Spanish quota

Spain Coach Vicente Del Bosque has admitted he wishes La Liga clubs had to field a certain number of Spanish players.

Del Bosque told Al Primer Toque that the signings made by the country’s biggest clubs disappoint him as national team boss, but conceded Coaches can’t take into account a player’s nationality when identifying transfer targets.

“The top three teams have signed three goalkeepers, if Keylor Navas is confirmed [at Real Madrid]. It remains to be seen whether or not he will play,” Marca reports Del Bosque as beginning.

“All three have signed foreign goalkeepers. I’m not against that but I wish there was a maximum number of Spanish.

“As Coaches we pick the best players without looking at the place of birth. There are young Spanish players in all positions who are very good.”

On the subject of goalkeepers, Del Bosque reflected on the situation of Victor Valdes, who missed the World Cup with a serious knee injury and is currently without a club after leaving Barcelona.

He also gave his thoughts on Xavi Hernandez’s decision to stay with Barca and Diego Costa’s move to Chelsea.

“Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have all made new signings. It’s most important to trust those who come,” he said.

“Victor worries me because he spent time [with the national team]. I hope he plays and recovers. He deserves it.

“The continuity of Xavi will be evaluated to see if it’s negative or positive for his involvement with Spain.

“Often you look at a player in the passage of time and it will be thrilling or disappointing. We have time to think.

“The transfer of Costa should be considered by the work he will do. We’re in an era were players of high quality are exported. The good thing is you can follow them every minute.”
