‘Independent Barca can’t play in Liga’

LFP President Javier Tebas has said that should Catalonia win independence from Spain, Barcelona wouldn’t be able to play in La Liga.

Tebas has been interviewed by AS and the subject of Catalonian independence was raised, with Tebas claiming a change in the law would be needed to allow La Blaugrana to play in Spanish football.

“I don’t like to speculate. If one day Catalonia isn’t Spain then that’s different,” Tebas said.

“If the Sports Act remains the same as today then they couldn’t compete in our League. The Sports Act would have to be changed.

“Andorra, for example, play in our competitions because the law specifically states that circumstance. That’s an additional provision.

“Initially, Barcelona could not compete in La Liga unless there is an interstate agreement.”

Tebas also weighed in on the Luis Suarez biting ban appeal, claiming the new Barca forward has been harshly treated by UEFA.

As it stands Suarez’s four-month ban will expire just before Barca are due to play Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu.

If the match is played on October 26, the Sunday, then Suarez will be free to play regardless of the outcome of his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“That won’t influence the decision to televise on one day or another,” Tebas insisted.

“We don’t even have it scheduled. What is clear is that the punishment of Luis Suarez should be reduced because it is overkill for what he did.”
