Ancelotti: Fitness over results

Carlo Ancelotti has reflected on Real Madrid’s loss to Roma, insisting that the summer is more about building up fitness than anything else.

“We tried to play well. Our defence was solid. We didn’t have a lot of chances but we weren’t bad,” Ancelotti said, according to AS.

“We had no injuries, which is most important. The players who arrived four days ago played well. The players are improving their fitness. In that sense, it went well.

“I’m missing a lot of players. Some return on August 1, some on August 5. Everyone will be ready to play the European Super Cup.

“It doesn’t mean those arriving on August 5 can’t play. With a week of training I can use them in the Super Cup.”

Ancelotti was also asked about the goalkeeping situation at Santiago Bernabeu – both the potential arrival of Keylor Navas and the competition between Iker Casillas and Diego Lopez.

“We must think of players only at Real Madrid at the moment,” he said of Navas.

“The market is open until August 31. I’m ready to prepare the team well.

“I haven’t decided the goalkeeper yet.”
