Pique expected Xavi to stay

Gerard Pique has said he isn’t surprised that Xavi Hernandez is staying at Barcelona as he expected that to be the case.

It was widely reported that Xavi was to leave Camp Nou amid offers from MLS and Qatar, but it’s now thought he will remain with La Blaugrana.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Pique told La Xarxa he believed Xavi would remain despite the rumours to the contrary.

“All the rumours and speculation saying he would leave and that this would be the end hasn’t happened,” Pique reflected.

“In my head I always had Xavi in the team. I see him as a future Barca Coach.”

Pique also looked ahead to the new season and vowed the team would do whatever they could to regain the title.

“This team is very talented and we will do our utmost to win,” he said.

“We’re candidates to win the League and we will give everything.”

Barca will be without Cesc Fabregas for the new season after the midfielder moved to Chelsea, Pique admitting that the transfer was best for all concerned.

“It was good for both parties. It was a lot of money for the club and I think Cesc will be made to feel very important,” he added.
