Iniesta: Dream to captain Barca

Andres Iniesta has said it would be a dream to be named the new captain of Barcelona following the retirement of Carles Puyol.

Iniesta has previously been one of the Barca captains but was behind both Puyol and Victor Valdes, but with the goalkeeper leaving this summer there is a vacancy.

Xavi Hernandez is also in line for the armband now it appears he is to stay at Camp Nou and Iniesta has spoken of the prospect of stepping in for Puyol.

“[Wearing the armband] are moments that make you feel happy and proud,” he told a Press conference, according to Mundo Deportivo.

“For people who have been at home here for a long time and have been part of the grassroots here, being captain of the first team has always been in your dreams.

“It’s a step because it means you’re still in the first team and you keep improving and you have the respect of your peers/

“The other part is that you’re getting older. Everything has its positive and negative part.

“The truth is I am very happy to be in this group and to get ahead of Puyol and Xavi and Victor, because to me they have always been references.”

Iniesta added that being a player and a captain is not just about what happens on the pitch, but what happens off it as well.

“The experiences that you live, not just in football but on a personal level, go towards you and make you a better person and a better player,” he continued.

“You’re always learning things and I’ve been clear during this time there is the challenge of doing better each year and I have learned to have the vision and desire to continue improving.

“This has been my challenge, to do what I could today, and I have years to continue doing it.”
