Cerezo denies going easy on Chelsea

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has denied giving Chelsea preferential treatment in their transfer dealings this summer.

AS reports Cerezo as discussing a number of topics, including the chance of Fernando Torres returning to his first club and the signing of Mario Mandzukic.

Chelsea have this summer signed both Diego Costa and Filipe Luis from the champions but Cerezo protested that there was little he could do to stop the Premier League side picking off the pair, suggesting they may rue their decision to move on.

“Diego Costa has gone for the termination clause, Filipe virtually,” he argued.

“Sometimes players want to play on a team and they play, but sometimes they want to play and when they sign, they regret it and can no longer come back. There have been many cases of that.”

Cerezo also reflected on the situation of Tiago Mendes, who originally left the club, only to re-sign for a few more years.

“It’s been done on time and we are delighted he is here with us because everyone can make mistakes,” Cerezo said.

“He was in a difficult situation but had the opportunity to go back. There are some who have gone and wanted to come back right away. But they can’t for very complicated reasons.

“Tiago plays were he wants to play, at Atletico.”

On the subject of Torres, who was earlier this week linked with Atletico, Cerezo took a diplomatic stance.

“So far he hasn’t come home. But he would have a good reception here and everyone who wants to come is welcome,” Cerezo said.
