Xavi ‘at Barca until January’

Xavi Hernandez is expected to remain at Barcelona but reports in Spain claim he will leave Camp Nou in January.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Xavi contacted the publication yesterday to contradict their front-page claim that his departure was about to be confirmed.

Xavi will instead begin pre-season training with Barca but it’s said that he has an agreement with New York City, and it will come into effect in January.

It was thought that Xavi would leave Barca this summer, either for MLS or the Middle East, and MD add that was the situation until Monday of this week.

Xavi had told President Josep Maria Bartomeu, sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and Coach Luis Enrique that he was to leave, only to have a change of heart.

There also exists the chance that Xavi could see out the season with Barca and move to the United States next summer.

He could also simply train with Barca until becoming a New York City player, with Enrique willing to let his former teammate plot his own course.

Xavi will then take up a two-year contract with the Manchester City-owned franchise, with the option for a third.
