Godin named third Atleti captain

Diego Godin has been appointed as one of the captains of Atletico Madrid, third in line behind Gabi and Raul Garcia.

AS reports the centre-back as replacing Tiago Mendes, who left the champions at the end of the season when his contract expired.

“I’m thrilled to be one of three club captains,” Godin said.

“For me it’s an honour and brings me tremendous happiness. I want to continue contributing everything I can to the team.

“I feel identified with this club because it’s my home. I’ll give everything as captain.”

Godin is starting his fifth season at Vicente Calderon and captained Uruguay during the World Cup.

He added that having won the title, reached the Champions League final and led his country in Brazil, he’s never had a season to match the one just finished.

“It was a great year for me. In fact it’s been the best year of my career,” Godin continued.

“The hardest thing is to stay there and keep growing. It’s year where everything has happened for me – the awesome League title, scoring at Camp Nou, the Champions League final, the World Cup.

“It was nice to win against England and Italy, especially scoring my goal. And captaining the national team was very special.”
