Di Maria ‘wanted double Madrid wage’

Angel Di Maria asked for his Real Madrid wage to be doubled before the World Cup and the club’s refusal sparked his likely exit, reports say.

Marca claim that Di Maria asked for a new contract as a consequence of his performances towards the end of the season, when he helped Madrid to a Copa Del Rey-Champions League double, being named man of the match in the final of the latter competition.

Madrid were willing to talk about a new contract but were taken aback by his request to go from €4m a year to €9m, which would have made him one of the club’s highest-earners.

Paris Saint-Germain have since stepped in and appear willing to give the Argentina international the pay packet he wants, although the French club’s situation with Financial Fair Play mean the agreed €60m transfer can’t be completed.

PSG are only allowed to spend €50m this summer after falling afoul of UEFA’s FFP regulations and have already spent that much on Chelsea’s David Luiz.

The Ligue 1 champions in theory have to sell before they buy and they’re not yet in a position to finalise Di Maria’s arrival.
