Barbosa surprised at Sevilla move

Mariano Barbosa has revealed he was surprised to be asked to join Sevilla having completed a move from Las Palmas.

Former Villarreal goalkeeper Barbosa spent four years at Las Palmas and leaves after his side missed out on promotion to the top flight.

AS reports the 29-year-old as saying he didn’t expect to get an offer to play for a club the stature of Los Rojiblancos.

“I was very surprised Sevilla wanted to sign me,” he said.

“Until I spoke to [Monchi] I didn’t believe it but fortunately it came true and I’m part of a great team.

“Hopefully I can do important things. I admit I was surprised to join one of the most important teams in Spain.

“I hope to win some trophies and have a good year. Having a trophy so close, the European Super Cup in Cardiff, makes me more anxious. Hopefully we can win it.

“I prefer to let the disappointment of not coming up with Las Palmas move aside and stay with the joy of this signing.

“I know the team’s history, the people, the city. I hope to help the team and do my best.”
