CONMEBOL support Suarez appeal

The South American football federation CONMEBOL have confirmed their support for Barcelona’s Luis Suarez as he appeals his ban for biting.

Suarez was suspended for nine international games and banned for four months from all football activity by FIFA after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s World Cup Group D win over the Azzurri.

He has since completed a move from Liverpool to Barca but the terms of the ban mean he can’t train with his new teammates or attend a presentation to mark the transfer.

CONMEBOL, headed by Suarez’s compatriot Eugenio Figueredo, has released a statement in which they publically backed appeals from Suarez and the Uruguayan Football Federation, who are taking htier case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“In this particular case, [CONMEBOL] can’t share the sanctions agreed and consider them manifestly excessive and disproportionate,” AS reports the statement as saying.

“From this moment, CONMEBOL wishes to express its full support and cooperation to the player and the [Uruguay] Football Association to exhaust all existing sporting options.”
