Gimenez: I need to play

Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez has lamented his ‘lost year’ at Vicente Calderon and admitted he needs to play regular football.

The 19-year-old moved to Atletico last summer from Danubio but played more often for Uruguay than Los Colchoneros.

He made only one League appearance for Atleti last season but featured regularly in the World Cup, playing in three of his country’s four fixtures.

Gimenez has told AS that the situation can’t go on much longer and he would consider leaving the club if he can’t break into the first team.

“I’ve talked to my representatives. I’ll look at the possibilities and make a decision that is best for me. I need to play because I lost a year,” he said.

“I grew up in many ways because European football makes you grow. But I have to return to Spain with my agent and find a solution to play.

“It was amazing to play at a World Cup at such a young age. I enjoyed it and the responsibility I had, but that’s passed now and I have to look forward.”

Gimenez also touched on compatriot Luis Suarez, rejecting the suggestion that the ban given to the new Barcelona signing is why Uruguay were knocked out of the World Cup by Colombia.

“He is a star in the team, a key player for us,” Gimenez acknowledged.

“After learning the penalty we tried to calm down and think positively for what was coming.

“The team has no excuse for Colombia. They played incredibly well and won fairly. Maybe with Suarez the result would have been the same.”
