Lahm: Germany were the best team

Germany captain Philipp Lahm has said his side were victorious at the World Cup because they had the best team, not the best individuals.

Mario Gotze scored the only goal of the game against Argentina, netting in extra time as penalties loomed large.

Gotze only entered the match in the final minutes of normal time and Lahm said after the final whistle that it was a team effort that won Germany’s fourth world crown.

“To have or not have the best individual players doesn’t matter,” Lahm said, according to AS.

“What matters is the better team and we’ve had it.”

Lahm added that the players weren’t worried with the goalless score line even as penalties approached, referring back to the semi-final win over Brazil.

Germany raced into a big lead against the hosts but Lahm insisted that knowing how rare that is meant they were able to keep calm.

“We knew that it’s not normal in a semi-final or a final of a World Cup to be winning 5-0 after 30 minutes,” he said.
