Reina: My future? Don’t know!

Pepe Reina doesn’t know if his future lies with Liverpool after his loan spell at Napoli came to an end this summer.

The Spain goalkeeper was allowed to leave Anfield last summer but missed out on a move to Barcelona, telling Mundo Deportivo that while there was contact last year, there wasn’t any this time around.

“Of course I’m with my team, Liverpool. I have a contract for two more years and I haven’t yet spoken with the Coach,” he said.

“I’m finishing my holiday and my agent is in charge of these things.

“I wasn’t hopeful of joining Barca this year. Last summer there was other contact but in the last season I have focused on doing well with Napoli and little else.”

Reina was asked for his thoughts on the situation of former Barca goalkeeper Victor Valdes, whose move to Monaco collapsed as the club gave in to concerns over his fitness after the serious knee injury he suffered in March.

He also touched on the future of national team colleague Xavi Hernandez, who is expected to leave Barca this summer.

“I don’t know in detail what has happened [with Valdes] but what seems clear is that Monaco is in the wrong because Victor will play at a high level,” he said.

“It must be a contractual issue, I guess, but certainly he’ll have offers from good teams and he will come back soon at a high level because Victor is very hardworking. And he’s still young.

“Officially I don’t know about Xavi, but if [he leaves] it’s a personal decision that should be respected, as was said of Victor’s decision not to renew.”
