Rizzoli to referee World Cup final

Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli has been handed the chance to take charge of Sunday’s World Cup final.

Germany take on Argentina in Rio’s Maracana stadium this weekend, with the winner lifting the Jules Rimet trophy.

And the man in charge for the clash has been confirmed as Rizzoli, who will be refereeing his third game of the tournament.

The 42-year-old has been accused of favouring the Albicelestes and Lionel Messi at this tournament though by Belgium boss Marc Wilmots.

“I don’t want to be a cry baby but I noticed the referee never gives fouls against Argentina,” he said after their 1-0 quarter-final defeat.“Every time something happens with Messi the referee gives him a free-kick.

“I notice he [Messi] made three fouls and no yellow card, we made one foul and one yellow card.”
