Football mourns Di Stefano’s death

The football world has mourned the passing of Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano, with a number of moving tributes.

The Blancos Honorary President suffered a heart attack in the Spanish capital on Saturday, but failed to recover and died at the age of 88 on Monday.

Current President Florentino Perez led the condolences yesterday, describing Di Stefano as ‘the greatest of all time’.

“It’s a very sad day. For me, for all the madridistas, for the world of football,” Cristiano Ronaldo tweeted.

“Don Alfredo leaves us, but his memory will last forever in our hearts. Legends never die. Thanks for everything Maestro.”

Messi meanwhile, wrote on Facebook: “Until forever, Don Alfredo. A legend and a great both on and off the pitch. Best wishes to his family and those close to him.”

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque also paid tribute to the former forward: “I knew him so well and I deeply lament his loss. A hug for all his friends and family and of course to all the Madrid fans who are experiencing a sad day.”
