Madrid cash in on Garay move

Real Madrid have received €7.5m from Benfica’s sale of Ezequiel Garay to Zenit St. Petersburg, it has been reported.

Garay yesterday left Benfica for Russia in a €15m deal but Madrid still held 50% of the centre-back’s rights.

That means they receive half of the fee, having sold Garay to Benfica for €5.5m in 2011.

His Benfica contract was due to expire next year and Garay had also attracted interest from Manchester United and Bayern Munich, AS report.

Garay is currently representing Argentina at the World Cup and has helped the South Americans out of the group stage.
