Simeone: I’ll never let Godin go

Diego Simeone has said Diego Godin is one of the most important players at Atletico Madrid and will never be allowed to leave the club.

Marca reports Cholo writing in a column for a football website that the Uruguay international is of vital importance to the champions.

“Godin is one of the most important players at the club. I would never let him go,” Simeone said.

“He has improved a lot in all possible aspects. He is a leader and I wish him well as a person and hope he wants to play with us in future.”

Godin scored the only goal of Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy yesterday, the victory confirming the South Americans’ progression in the World Cup at the expense of the Azzurri.

He was asked about his club future shortly after the match and insisted he would be staying at Vicente Calderon.

“Sure, next season I’ll still be in Madrid. I’m happy there and I have a contract. I have four years,” Godin said.
