Zidane ‘staying at Madrid’

Zinidine Zidane has confirmed he is to remain as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Real Madrid.

The former France international had been linked with a number of coaching posts, most strongly at Bordeaux, AS reports.

Speaking after taking part in a Madrid-Inter veterans’ match – which ended in a 2-2 draw – Zidane revealed he was staying at Santiago Bernabeu, although suggested he would eventually move on.

“At the moment I am here and I will continue here,” Zidane said. “Let’s see what happens.

“I’m enjoying the experience [of coaching]. It’s not the same as playing, but I’m enjoying it.”

The Bordeaux President, Jean-Luois Triaud, told French television that Zidane was who he targeted for the job at Stade Chaban-Dalme.

“I won’t deny we had a lot of contact but we couldn’t recruit him,” Triaud said.

“He’s committed to Madrid and don’t forget his family is very settled there.”

Former Bayern Munich right-back Willy Sangol was eventually appointed instead.
