Villa to play for Melbourne

David Villa will play for Australian side Melbourne City prior to his move to New York City FC.

AS reports the Spain striker as confirming he will turn out for the A-League outfit on loan prior to taking to the field for his new club. As many as 10 games are expected for the former Atletico Madrid forward.

Melbourne City are, like New York City FC, co-owned by Manchester City, and were formerly known as Melbourne Heart. Manchester City confirmed the name change earlier on Thursday.

“From a football point of view it’s a great opportunity to play in a new League and a new country and of course, it’s ideal to play competitive football in the run-up to MLS,” Villa said.

“I’m sure that playing for Melbourne City will be a wonderful experience.”

Villa will not be the first World Cup winner to turn out in Australia after Italy’s Alessandro Del Piero spent two years with Sydney FC.
