Mathieu ‘happy at Valencia’

Jeremy Mathieu has told Valencia Coach Juan Antonio Pizzi he is happy to stay at the club despite interest from Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

AS reports that Mathieu and Pizzi have met to discuss the defender’s future, with Pizzi eager to ensure the France international stays at Mestalla.

“I told Pizzi that Barcelona might come for me,” AS quotes Mathieu as saying.

“I also told him that I am happy at Valencia. I feel responsible for this club and the fans.”

AS add that Mathieu had no interest in a move to Munich as his family is settled in Spain and he didn’t want to have to adapt to a new country, having taken time to learn the language.

Mathieu’s release clause is €20m – €35m with tax, AS say – and it’s not yet known if Barca will try to tempt Valencia into a sale by meeting the stipulation.
