Torres: Tough to accept Atleti CL loss

Fernando Torres has offered his commiserations to Atletico Madrid after they were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

The Chelsea striker was on the end of a semi-final knockout from his former team but Atletico couldn’t go all the way, going down to a 4-1 defeat after extra-time on Saturday in Lisbon.

AS reports Torres as admitting the defeat pained him, but he insisted it wouldn’t hamper Spain’s preparations for the World Cup despite a number of potential squad members featuring in the 120-minute match.

“It was tough to accept because Atletico came close,” Torres said.

“Players from Madrid and Atletico will come here euphoric because of the great season they have had.

“Here are top players and it is normal they come having played more minutes. We already had this problem in another World Cup and European Championships.”
