‘Hopefully we’re back next year’

Iker Casillas and Florentino Perez have celebrated Real Madrid’s Champions League success at an official function with the mayor of Madrid.

A parade through the city was held, stopping at Puerta del Sol before taking a trip to Santiago Bernabeu.

AS reports the mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, as welcoming Madrid, as well as La Decima, before President Perez presented her with a replica European Cup and a Real Madrid shirt signed by the players.

“Welcome to the home of all Madrilenos,” the mayor said.

“You arrive with a trophy that fills us all with happiness.

“I congratulate fans of both teams for their exemplary behaviour. We left the match more united than ever.

“Madrid is back at the top of the sport. It’s an honour to have a team like Real Madrid, the best in history.

“Your effort brought the Copa del Rey to Cibeles a month ago. Now you return with La Decima.

“Thank you for being a mirror of the values of sport and bringing together the name of our city.

“I repeat my desire to see you here in August with the European Super Cup. I know you will do everything possible.

“Congratulations to the champions and Hala Madrid!”

Perez then took the microphone before handing over to Casillas.

“Here’s La Decima. We promised and thanks to these players and this coaching staff, we’ve met our promise,” Perez said.

“We were true to history. We never gave up. We live and will live to overcome challenges.

“I am proud of these players and this team. There are 10 titles for the Madrid legend to grow uncontrollably. Real Madrid is eternal.”

Casillas spoke to represent the playing squad and cast an eye to the future, perhaps this time next year.

“On behalf of the players, thank you for the welcome,” the captain said.

“We wanted to bring the European Cup to all the local citizens, and those who are around the world, and the city itself.

“Hopefully next year we can come back here. That would mean we’ve won something important.”
