Arbeloa confirms Roja retirement

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa has confirmed he is retiring from international football.

The 31-year-old was not included in Spain’s provisional 30-man World Cup squad and, with younger players having been selected in his place, he feels the time is right to move on.

Speaking to the media after training with Los Blancos, the former Liverpool man thanked fans for their support throughout an international career that began in 2008 and has included two European Championship wins in 2008 and 2012, as well as 2010’s World Cup triumph.

“It has nothing to do with not going to the World Cup,” Arbeloa commented. “My decision had already been taken.

“I respect Del Bosque, he has put his faith more in other players and that’s it.

“My time with Spain has come and gone, I hope they can be world champions.

“My relationship with the fans has always been important. I am grateful for the respect they have shown me.”
