‘Levante’s best player was the GK’

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi doesn’t feel his side could have done any more to beat Levante on Sunday.

Levante ran out 2-0 winners at Ciutat de Valencia with a Filipe Luis own goal and a second-half effort from David Barral.

Atletico remain top of the table after a weekend which saw Barcelona and Real Madrid both draw at home and miss the chance to greatly cut the League leaders’ advantage.

Gabi said after the match that Atleti remain confident of claiming the title as it is still in their hands.

“I’m proud of the team. We tried in every way. Their best player was the goalkeeper,” AS reports the midfielder as saying.

“We tried but we haven’t been successful and the early goal made us go forward to do what we could.

“We have to keep working and on Sunday comes another final.

“The group is hurt, without saying more. We can’t make a drama out of this because we are privileged to depend on us.

“Now more than ever I am confident in this team. It’s another thing but the numbers are good and if we win two games, we’re champions.

“We hadn’t won anything and we haven’t lost anything.”

Atleti play Barcelona away from home on the final day of the season and Gabi suggested it would all come down to that game, adding they also need to win this weekend.

“Now it’s more beautiful. It’s always meant a lot to us to reach where we are. No one has given us anything and now they give us less,” he continued.

“On Sunday we play an important game for the last final at Camp Nou. We try to win.”
