‘Real Madrid the model to follow’

Inter President Erick Thohir has revealed that the Italian giants are looking to model themselves on Real Madrid.

The Indonesian owner of the Serie A side was recently in the Spanish capital for a first-hand look at Los Blancos’ facilities.

And the tycoon has admitted that the Santiago Bernabeu outfit are the barometer for football teams all over the world.

“My Madrid experience? When I was there I had the chance to learn,” he told Inter Channel.

“Everyone needs to be looking to improve their knowledge and everyone is different. Being in Madrid gave me the opportunity to look at their coaching methods, which are fantastic.

“Obviously at the moment we can’t copy what they have done 100 per cent, because we are in a period of transition.

“But we will definitely improve the [training ground] Pinetina. Improving the structure will be good for the players, Valdebebas is the model.

“We want to be sure of returning to play in Europe, achieving that would be a good thing for our history and would allow our young players to play more often.

“For me it’s exciting to go into tournaments to play matches against teams like Real Madrid and Manchester United.”
