Aguirre: Espanyol are in trouble

Javier Aguirre pulled no punches following Espanyol’s 2-1 home defeat to Almeria on Sunday.

Christian Stuani put Espanyol in front but was later sent off, as was Javi Lopez. Goals from Fran Velez and Suso later delivered a crucial three points for Franciso’s strugglers.

The result leaves Espanyol eight points off the bottom three with three games to play, and sees Almeria go two points behind Getafe.

“We’re in trouble again now,” Marca reports Aguirre as saying post-match.

“There’s no more. We’ve got to make a statement.

“If we work harder we’ll do better and go forward. Our future has totally changed.

“It’s not just a defeat. It’s something else.

“It may be that we unconsciously believed we were safe, that we could lock our place in the League.

“I don’t want to go to the last day. It’s an agony we deserve and it’s not over until it’s over.

“Starting with me we haven’t been up to it.”
