Costa: A crucial month

Diego Costa believes Atletico Madrid are in the most important part of the season as they attempt to claim the title.

Atletico lead the table by three points, with Real Madrid in second and Barcelona a further point back in third. Diego Simeone’s side have four games to play as well as the Champions League semi-final with Chelsea.

“Now is a very crucial month. We know what we have to do,” AS reports Costa as saying.

“The team has the mentality, strength and conviction. It’s very important and we will give everything.”

Atletico play Elche on Friday night and Simeone has described the game as akin to a Cup final.

“The Coach said it’s a final so we have to treat it like one because it’s a very important game,” Costa continued.

“Elche are an opponent who are always complicated and they have a good team, but we will try to play our game.

“At home, with the supporters, we are very strong.”

There appeared little chance of Costa playing against Elche – or any part in the rest of the season – when he was stretchered off after colliding with the goal post in last weekend’s 2-0 win over Getafe.

In transpired that Costa had suffered a bad cut, rather than the feared broken leg, and the Spain international has admitted he was worried for a moment.

“I’m fine. The truth is it was a scare and thank God nothing happened,” Costa said.

“I’m eager to play the next game.”
