Aguirre bemoans heavy defeat

Javier Aguirre believes Espanyol’s 4-1 defeat against Sevilla was a harsh result considering the pattern of the match.

Sevilla claimed the points at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan through Stephane M’bia, a Kevin Gameiro brace and a late goal from Ivan Rakitic.

Espanyol’s only reply came from a Sergio Garcia penalty early in the second-half that made the score 2-1.

Aguirre told his post-match Press conference that it was a tight game for the overwhelming majority of the tie, with Sevilla only pulling away in the final minutes.

“The score was too much punishment. We were in it for 85 minutes because it was 2-1 and we had our chances,” Aguirre said.

“I don’t want to detract from Sevilla, an opponent of much authority and respect.

“I wish them luck for Thursday [against Porto] since they are a Spanish team.”

Aguirre added that he hadn’t given up home of taking Espanyol into Europe next season.

“First, we have to do our job, which is not over yet,” Aguirre continued.

“There are 10 teams below us and we have to keep pushing. In the end the table will be what it is.”
