‘Onwards and upwards for Getafe’

Cosmin Contra believes Getafe’s win over Valencia can provide the springboard to push on this season.

Goals from Angel Lafita, Ciprian Marica and Pedro Leon overturned Eduardo Vargas’ opener and gave El Geta a first win in 14 games.

The three points also moved Getafe out of the relegation zone and Contra told his post-match Press conference that his side can build for the future now.

“We had control and beat a very good team,” Contra said.

“With this attitude we can move onwards and upwards.”

The game ended in controversy as Valencia’s Jeremy Mathieu was sent off for striking Leon as the winger celebrated his goal.

Contra explained that Leon meant no provocation by his celebration and that if Leon is to come in for criticism, so too must Mathieu.

“If Pedro has offended the fans then he’s asked for forgiveness,” Contra said.

“But the fans need to understand that tensions were running high.

“If Pedro was wrong, then so was Mathieu.

“Once the match was over we shook hands and we apologise is anyone was offended. But we’ve won at a difficult stadium.”
