Courtois will reveal future ‘soon’

Thibaut Courtois has said he will very shortly have an announcement regarding his future.

Courtois spoke to Onda Cero in a wide-ranging interview that touched on his future, the Champions League and the title race, among other topics.

The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper is due to go back to Chelsea at the end of the season at the conclusion of his latest loan move to Vicente Calderon.

But speculation has been rife that Courtois could make a permanent move to Atletico, or stay at Chelsea to challenge Petr Cech for his position, or even move to Real Madrid.

Courtois gave little away regarding his next step but said more would be known in a short while.

“I’ll reveal my decision soon. I’ll let everyone know but for now I’m just focused on the games we have,” Courtois said.

The Belgium international added that Atletico’s 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao at San Mames is a sign that Atleti really can win the title.

“It was a tough game but we did well, getting three points from a very difficult place,” Courtois continued.

“Many people thought we couldn’t win there and San Mames is very complicated. It’s a real blow on the table.

“It is seven finals that remain now. We’re going game by game and that’s the best way.

“They are very tough matches and it’s best to take each game on its own. But what we’re doing is very good.”

Courtois insisted that while Atletico would love to be crowned League champions, they are not getting carried away.

“Let every game come and we will see where we get,” he said.

“It would be a dream to win the title. But we have both feet on the ground. We are humble.

“We’re close, with only a few matches to go, but it’s best to go slowly.”

Atletico were recently given a talk by Irene Villa, who lost both her legs in a terrorist attack.

“I didn’t know her story,” Courtois admitted.

“When she started to talk and I saw pictures and learned the history, I was in shock.

“How she fought! It’s very emotional.

“The whole team was very surprised listening. It’s made us very eager to fight for what we stand for.”

Atletico also have the Champions League on their minds with a quarter-final tie against title rivals Barcelona getting underway on Tuesday at Camp Nou.

“When we saw the draw gave us Barcelona we thought it would have been better playing a team from another country,” Courtois said.

“The other seven teams in the draw are very strong, like us, and they could all win the trophy.

“Matches against Barca are always hard, for them as well, and I think it will be decided by small details.

“If we can get a result at Camp Nou then when we’re back at Vicente Calderon, I’m sure we can get something.

“What we have already done is very nice.

“I think Barcelona is the favourite but we will try to get a good result there.”

Courtois concluded by offering his support to Barca goalkeeper Victor Valdes, who will miss the rest of the season and the World Cup with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

“It’s very sad. That knee injury has happened to a lot of players this year,” Courtois said.

“He’s in his last season at Barca and the World Cup is so close. I send him a lot of encouragement.”
