Benitez test upsets Granada President

Granada winger Dani Benitez is facing a hefty fine and a lengthy ban after allegedly testing positive for cocaine, reports in Spain have said.

The failed test came after Granada’s 1-0 win over Real Betis on February 16. Benitez entered the match in the 60th minute but was sent off 16 minutes later.

AS say that the Spanish anti-doping authorities could look to make an example of Benitez with a severe punishment, if the failed test is confirmed.

Granada President Quique Pina has said he will support any decision to seek the maximum punishment for Benitez, adding he felt personally betrayed.

“Sport and football are for children and the whole world. Sport serves to care and to keep people on a straight line,” Pina said.

“News like this throws a bucket of cold water on all of that.

“I’m very upset because in sport and in football you never expect this to happen.”

Benitez has one season remaining on his Granada contract and has made nine appearances for the club this season.
