UEFA to introduce Nations League

UEFA are to introduce a new international competition, dubbed the Nations League, from 2018-19.

Britain’s Daily Telegraph has reported that all 54 members of the European governing body have already agreed to back the proposal before it is put to vote at this week’s annual congress.

The format hasn’t been revealed in full yet but countries would be split into three or four groups, with the top group of 16 nations being subdivided into four groups of four.

World and European champions Spain would go into this top group, along with the likes of Germany, Italy, France, England, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Promotion and relegation between groups would be possible and the four group winners would face each other in a series of games over a few days at a neutral venue to determine the winner.

The tournament would take place in odd numbered years and be held on dates currently given to international friendlies.
