Lionel Messi believes Barcelona’s performance against Manchester City was the kind their critics have been calling for.
Barca beat City 2-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League.
Messi scored the opening goal on Wednesday having also netted in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium.
“We had two very serious setbacks [against Real Sociedad and Real Valladolid] with critics of the way we play and our image,” Sport reports Messi as saying after the match.
“Today we became the club people want and we expect to be.
“We know when we don’t do things right. We’re the first to criticise ourselves and we’re not beyond criticism.
“We knew we had to score tonight to finish the game off and rest easy, because we knew the potential of City. But we were never really in danger.”
