Getafe appoint Contra

Getafe have sacked Luis Garcia and appointed former player Cosmin Contra as the club’s new Coach.

President Angel Torres confirmed at a Press conference on Monday that Garcia was no longer in charge of El Geta, with Contra, formerly the boss of Romanian side Petrolul Ploiesti, taking over.

Getafe haven’t won in their last 12 League games, with their last victory coming at the end of November, and are now 15th in the table, a point above the relegation zone.

Contra, 38, played for Getafe between 2005 and 2010 and took Petrolul to third in the Romanian League. Petrolul have confirmed Contra’s departure.

“I wish the best to Luis Garcia and all his staff,” Torres said.

“He was a great professional and I wish him well.

“Perhaps a change of direction is needed for us to have another year in the Primera.

“We’re not so far in decline we can’t be saved.

“The important thing is that the team pulls up the table. We close the door on the past, wish the new Coach the best of luck and hope he meets the goal of being in La Liga next season.”
