Aguirre: Espanyol not safe yet

Javier Aguirre has insisted that despite Espanyol beating Elche 3-1 on Sunday, his side aren’t safe from the drop.

Goals from David Lopez, Diego Colotto and Pizzi gave Espanyol victory, with a late Juan Fuentes the only consolation for Elche.

Los Periquitos are now ninth in the table with 36 points, 10 points clear of the bottom three but Aguirre told his post-match Press conference that Espanyol can’t assume they’re safe.

“With 36 points we can’t say we’ll be here next year and we must secure safety mathematically,” the Mexican said.

“Nobody with that figure has been relegated but that is our goal. It’s what I told the President.”

Aguirre was nonetheless pleased with the result, with two goals coming from dead-ball situations.

“If you start saying you’re going to score three goals and get three points you’ll take it. I’m very happy and the players are too.

“We’ve worked all season on set-pieces and we have some very talented people, like Sergio Garcia and Simao Sabrosa.”
