Diego Simeone has said there are no reasons other than a poor performance for Atletico Madrid’s defeat to Almeria.

Atleti were beaten 2-0 by Almeria and had goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia sent off for the penalty that gave the hosts their second goal, and with Simeone having used all three substitutes, Gabi had to take the gloves.

“It was a game where our opponent tried to play,” Simeone said at his post-match Press conference.

“In the first-half we could have gone in front. We had the chances, but in football these things happen.

“We’re not looking for excuses. We can’t blame the referee, the wind or anything.

“Our opponent did a great job and congratulations to them.”

Atletico have now suffered defeat in their last two games, losing the Copa del Rey semi-final first-leg to Real Madrid in midweek.

Simeone rejected the suggestion that his team were affected by the derby defeat and insisted there was only one way to put results back on track.

“The only way to get back to how we were is working hard, and that’s what we’ll do,” he said.
