Perez reveals Bernabeu plans

Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez has presented the winner of the contract to remodel the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.

In theory, according to what was promised in the Shareholders’ Assembly in 2012, work was due to get under way in the summer of 2013. Nevertheless, the project to put a roof on the ground dates back to 2004. The winners, the German company GPM Architekten and the Catalan companies L-35 and Ribas [a Barça shareholder], will aim to complete the building work over the next three years without disrupting the stadium’s sporting life, according to Volkwin Marg, owner of GPM.

The budget has been set at €400m. The presentation highlighted how Madrid will increase 30 per cent of the stadium’s income, though it remains unclear whether that will include increased capacity.

“We are looking for the best for our members and fans,” Perez told reporters. “There will now be a draft created along with a basic project to process the licences that will enable us to hold a tender for the work and subsequently look for financing.”

It has been claimed that the €400m funding for the project will come from naming rights and from bonds from shareholders.
