‘Racing are not the bad guys’

Paco Fernandez has applauded the actions of the Racing Santander players in boycotting the Copa and insisted they should not be punished.

Speaking to reporters, the Coach revealed he and the players were thankful for the support of the club’s fans, who he feels made the strike possible.

“I want to thank my players for their bravery,” Fernandez began.

“Today was the biggest game of our lives. We did this to get our dignity back.

“But without the fan support this would have been a very difficult decision to take.”

Real Sociedad were leading 3-1 from the first-leg of the quarter-final and will now progress to play Barcelona in the semi-final, subject to confirmation from the governing body.

When asked if he was worried his players might find themselves in trouble for refusing to play a scheduled game, Fernandez dismissed the notion.

“We are confident we won’t be sanctioned because we are not the bad guys here.”
