Bartomeu could extend Martino deal

New Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu could extend the contract of Coach Tata Martino until 2016.

Bartomeu is mulling over whether or not to increase Martino’s contract to the length of his term as President, which expires in 2016, Mundo Deportivo has reported.

Martino’s current deal will be up at the end of the 2014-15 season.

Should the Coach’s contract be extended for a further year, it would mean he will come up for renewal not only at the same time as the term of the President, but also the contract of Andoni Zubizarreta, the sporting director.

Bartomeu is said to be highly impressed by Martino since the Argentine took over from Tito Vilanova, and was heavily involved in the process that appointed Martino in the first place.

Zubizarreta and Bartomeu spoke at length via video call with Martino prior to his appointment.

Bartomeu also intends to sign Lionel Messi to a new contract that will make the forward the world’s highest-paid player.
