Martino: Xavi should end career here

Tata Martino believes Xavi Hernandez should finish his career at Barcelona after the midfielder made his 700th appearance.

Xavi was brought on as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 Copa del Rey win over Getafe to reach the landmark but it comes at a time when his future is in doubt.

The player himself has suggested he could leave Camp Nou and revealed he had the chance to precede Pep Guardiola and join Bayern Munich in 2008.

It has also been rumoured that Manchester City want Xavi as part of their MLS franchise, New York City FC, when it opens in a few years’ time.

But Mundo Deportivo reports that Martino is adamant Xavi should remain with the Catalans.

“First of all, congratulations to Xavi,” Martino said.

“700 games is difficult to reach and especially in Barcelona. It strikes me that few can do it.

“How many more games? As many as he wants.

“He should not retire in a shirt other than the one he has worn 700 times.”
