Madrid set to pay Suarez clause

Real Madrid are prepared to pay the £70m release clause in Liverpool striker Luis Suarez’s contract this summer, the Metro reports.

The Reds are hoping the lure of Champions League football will be enough to tempt the Uruguayan into staying for at least one more season, should Brendan Rodgers’ men qualify for the competition, but they are aware not even that may prevent him from leaving if Madrid match the figure that could see him depart Anfield.

Suarez recently penned a reported £200,000-a-week deal with the Premier League club but his representatives ensured the agreement contained a clause that enables him to leave in the event Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League.

According to the Mirror, the Merseysiders wanted to set the release clause at £100m but were told the figure was excessive.

It is understood that it was only when a compromise was reached that the deal was eventually signed.
