Real Betis appoint Garrido

Real Betis have acted quickly to replace Coach Pepe Mel, appointing Juan Carlos Garrido to their bench with immediate effect.

Mel was removed from his position at the Benito Villamarin on Monday evening following a difficult start to the season for Betis, culminating in the weekend’s 2-2 draw with fellow strugglers Rayo Vallecano.

Late on Monday night, Los Beticos announced through their official website that Mel’s replacement, Juan Carlos Garrido, has been appointed and will take charge from Tuesday.

Garrido developed as a Coach in the lower ranks at Villarreal, before working through to the senior side to replace Ernesto Valverde in early 2010.

The 44-year-old, who in September ended a 10-month spell at Club Brugge, is best known for taking Villarreal into the Champions League through a fourth place finish in 2010-11.
